Blogmas day 5: 5 tips for road tripping at Christmas

Hi and welcome to Blogmas day 5! Today I’m going to be sharing my top 5 tips for road tripping over the Christmas period! I hope these tips are helpful – I know how crazy road tripping can be at any time of year! So throw in the crazy busy traffic and everybody having the same idea to getaway and it’s no wonder it gets overwhelming!

Tip number 1 – Always plan ahead!

This seems so stupidly obvious but trust me it’s the key ingredient for a successful road trip over the holiday season! Everybody wants to go away or travel between places for family gatherings etc. So always check public transport and road closures before you travel! But there’s more on that in tip number 4. Planning ahead is so important so you know the best route for your journey and it helps calculate arrival times so you can avoid areas of high traffic – timings are so crucial!

Tip number 2 – Book hotels or accommodation a long way in advance for the best prices

Advance is always key to finding the right hotel, at the right time, for the right price in the right location – especially over Christmas! If you need an overnight or longer stay then make sure you plan everything out beforehand! There are loads of different sites you can use to compare and find amazing hotels! I’ll link some down below:

Booking.com

Expedia

Travel Republic

Hotels.com

Kayak

Trivago

Tip number 3 – Make sure to pack plenty of snacks!!!

Okay they don’t have to be cute little homemade snowmen biscuits or Santa made out of strawberries and cream, any snacks will do! But imagine the worst case scenario of being stuck in a traffic jam – it’s bad enough already! But if you’re hungry as well it’s going to make the situation so much less enjoyable! Make sure you have enough drinks and snacks with you just in case any delays should occur or you just get hungry during the day! Also, if you’re driving it’s always important to keep them accessible so you can easily reach them, unless you have other people in the car with you to pass you things!

Tip number 4 – Check public transport or road closures before you travel

There are loads of websites and apps to check this! For example if you are travelling by train you can check your local train timings for the area you’re travelling to and from, and likewise for buses and taxis and planes. There are also sites where you can google the road you are going to be travelling on to check if it’s clear. As well as a good old fashioned car radio! If you set the radio to automatic alerts for your area you will get travel cut ins – even whilst still listening to your music or sitting in silence enjoying the peace! That way it helps you to plan your route accordingly before you get stuck in traffic that could delay you by hours!

Tip number 5 – Have fun!

I know it’s a really cliche tip but it’s honestly key! If you’re not having fun then what’s the point! Just do all of the four steps above to have a stress free road trip and then happiness and fun is pretty much guaranteed – especially with some festive tunes blasting out!
